Acast is a Swedish-founded company that provides hosting, monetization and growth support for podcasts, and podcast advertising solutions for brands and media agencies. Launching in 2014, it developed a dynamic insertion technology which can target advertising within podcasts based on location, time, and personal data. The company champions an independent and open ecosystem for podcasting, where podcasts hosted with Acast are available on all podcast listening apps. Acast was founded by Karl Rosander and Måns Ulvestam in 2013; together with Johan Billgren as co-founder. Acast hosts over 88,000 podcasts, with over 430 million listens every month. - Feb 25: Since launch, Acast has paid over AUD $44.9mn (US $28.6mn) to creators in Australia and New Zealand, the company has revealed. It recently signed big-hitters Casefile True Crime and Toni and Ryan.
- Feb 21: In Sweden, podcasting is continuing to grow, according to new data from Dagens Media. Hosting and ad tech company Podspace is the platform growing fastest, up 23% year-on-year, though it’s still significantly smaller than Acast and Swedish Radio. (Notable that Podspace is in Apple’s announcement today, too - see above)
- Feb 12: Acast has posted its first year in profit, according to the company’s financial year-end report. The full report claims a 19% net sales growth for 2024, and an EBITDA profit of $2.2mn. Total listens were down 13% in 2024, which the company attributes to Apple’s changes in iOS 17.
- Feb 3: One of the UK’s biggest podcasts, Sh**ged Married Annoyed has signed with Adelicious. The show was with Acast, and joins other Avalon shows from Russell Howard and Frank Skinner on the podcast network. The award-winning show has spawned a book, a TV chat show, and had two live arena tours (including selling out Wembley SSE Arena and the O2).
- Jan 30: The winners of the UK’s Political Podcast Awards were announced. Podcast of the year was Goalhanger’s The Rest is Politics, but Persephonica’s Political Currency and Electoral Dysfunction from Sky News won two awards. Acast shows won the most awards.
