- Aug 6: Back in Dec 2021, the National Association of the Deaf and Disability Rights Activists sued SiriusXM for not providing podcast transcripts in its app. In 2022, SiriusXM kicked back, calling it un-necessary and unreasonable. Since then, we've seen Apple Podcasts, Pocket Casts, Overcast, Spotify and even SiriusXM add transcripts to podcast apps - to the point where it's an expected feature. It now appears that the two sides have reached agreement in principle on all key terms after more than a year of negotiations suspended the court action. Judge Jeanette Vargas has allowed a final deadline extension of Oct 30.
- Jul 2: More and more people are using podcast app Overcast. Buzzsprout's platform stats for June show that podcast consumption by Overcast has increased by +28% year-on-year. Most other apps are relatively static - except Spotify, which shows a slump of -26%. (Some of this could be attributed to Spotify video, which is hosted by Spotify themselves). "Web browsers" are up by 4.4%.
- Apr 14: Overcast has doubled its premium pricing, from $14.99 to $29.99 a year for new subscriptions. Existing subscribers remain at the earlier price for now. The podcast app recently added transcriptions for all podcasts, though is yet to respect creator-produced transcripts.
- Nov 26, 2025: Overcast’s new feature that removes feed drops and trailers (“you may also like” type activity) from automatic download in the app has been heavily criticised by John McDermott of Caloroga Shark Media. “Guess what gang, those feed drops pay pretty well,” he says. He also points out that “you may also like” type ads are a revenue generation tool in Overcast itself.
- Nov 21, 2025: Overcast has launched a new feature dubbed “Promos and Reruns” that can automatically skip downloading any feed drops or trailer drops. The app also now - finally - displays per-episode artwork, and shows season/episode numbers. The app will soon support transcripts, we understand.
