In acht afleveringen vertelt Hendrik Spiering dat de Middeleeuwen echt geen richtingloze rotzooi waren, zoals vaak te zien in films en geschiedenisboeken. Het was geen wrede tijd vol wraakzuchtige heersers en mensen in lompen, en evenmin een harmonische tijd van vrome christenen en tevreden boeren. Integendeel, aan de hand van acht verhalen uit originele middeleeuwse bronnen schetst Wilde Eeuwen een betekenisvolle tijd, vol groeiende orde en cultuur.
