Wat heeft Sywert van Lienden gemeen met een Britse lingeriemagnaat, de ‘gouden vrijgezel’ van Spanje, de dochter van een Duitse politicus en een groep Italiaanse zakenmannen? Ze verdienden allemaal miljoenen met een mondkapjesdeal tijdens de coronacrisis.
Nu staan ze in hun eigen landen terecht en worden ze beschuldigd van fraude, machtsmisbruik, oplichting of belastingontduiking. Maar, publiekelijk zijn ze allang veroordeeld vanwege hun schaamteloosheid, misleiding en profiteren van een crisis.
In Mondkapjesmiljonairs vertellen onderzoeksjournalisten in Engeland, Duitsland, Italië, Spanje en Nederland hoe zij hun eigen schandaal aan het licht brachten en wat hun verhaal losmaakte. De verhalen zijn een meetlat waar we Sywert langs kunnen leggen in aanloop naar de rechtszaak die 22 april van start gaat. Hoe moeten we, als we deze andere verhalen kennen, naar Sywert kijken? Is wat hij heeft gedaan gewoon lelijk, of ronduit misdadig?
