La mitología azteca son las creencias y religión de esta antigua civilización ubicada a lo que hoy es “México Central”. Entre los siglos IX y finales del XI, comenzó una gran migración de varias tribus, incluyendo una que se llamaba a sí misma los «Mexicas». Los mitos que describen esta migración llaman al lugar de origen “Aztlán”, que a veces se traduce como “lugar de la garza blanca”, y es de este nombre que obtenemos la palabra “aztecas” o “gente de Aztlán”. A lo largo de los siglos que siguieron al comienzo de la migración desde Aztlán, los pueblos aztecas establecieron ciudades-estado e imperios en el México Central; el mayor de los cuales se centró en la gran ciudad de Tenochtitlán, la capital de la cultura y el poder político mexica, que se había asentado sobre las aguas del lago de Texcoco. Hoy en día, esa antigua capital ha sido sobre construida por la Ciudad de México. Una de las principales dificultades para reconstruir las tradiciones mitológicas originales de los aztecas es la escasez de fuentes. Este problema es debido a los misioneros españoles que rastrearon y quemaron los libros y registros aztecas. De los muchos miles de textos y documentos que debían haber existido, solo quedan doce a día de hoy.
