University Park PA, USA—Democracy is one of those words that everyone uses, but far fewer people know what it means.
The Democracy Works podcast aims to help listeners understand what it means to live in a democracy, and what it takes to make democracy thrive. Topics include voting, protest, the free press and civics education.
The podcast aims to rise above the daily news grind and provide educational look at these topics. Democracy Works launched in March 2018 and has had listeners in all 50 states and 100 countries — which speaks to the desire for discussions about politics and related topics that are not partisan and not punditry.
Season three of the podcast begins January 21 with the fundamental question of “What Is Democracy?” It features a conversation with writer and filmmaker Astra Taylor, who released a documentary of the same name last year.
Upcoming episodes this season include a discussion of the relationship between economic inequality and democracy, and a look at the state of democracy in Brazil, Hungary and other countries around the world.
Democracy Works is produced by the McCourtney Institute for Democracy at Penn State and WPSU Penn State, central Pennsylvania’s NPR affiliate. The show won a People’s Choice Podcast Award in 2018.
New episodes are released each Monday and available at democracyworkspodcast.com or any of the major podcast apps.
