Workout music podcast Podrunner celebrates thirteen years

San Francisco CA, USA—Podrunner, the popular workout-music podcast, celebrates thirteen groundbreaking years of exercise music mixes this month.

Podrunner shot to the top of iTunes’ podcast charts when it debuted February 28, 2006, and remained among the top Health & Fitness podcasts for ten straight years. In 2006 the fitness series garnered iTunes’ People’s Choice and Best New Podcast awards, and also earned Best Podcast awards in 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010. In 2008, Podrunner’s co-branded online ad campaign with Timex was nominated for a coveted “Stevie” award.

The series was almost an afterthought, says creator Steve Boyett. “I was learning my DJ craft by making workout mixes for a girlfriend who was a distance runner, and a friend suggested I make them available as a podcast.” Thirteen years ago, Boyett explains, “podcasting was a fairly new thing. There was nothing out there like Podrunner. Its success caught me by surprise, and I’ve been playing catchup ever since.”

The listener-supported series has garnered recommendations in Self, Runners World, Running Times, Women’s Health, Prevention, and many other magazines, newspapers, and high-profile websites. A spinoff series, Podrunner: Intervals (with programs designed by bestselling trainer Jenny Hadfield), debuted on iTunes at #4.

“I’ve heard Podrunner called the Coca Cola of workout music,” says Boyett. “But it still flabbergasts me that it’s been going strong this long. It literally changed my life.” Boyett, a San Francisco-area writer and DJ, is also co-organizer of the San Francisco Podcasters Association.
