The Price of Music is a new weekly podcast about the money behind the music business

Press Release ·

The Price of Music, a new weekly podcast all about the money behind the music industry, is launching on Wednesday January 31st 2024.

In each episode of The Price of Music, BBC 6 Music’s Steve Lamacq and Music Ally’s Stuart Dredge will use their decades of collective experience to make sense of the latest stories making waves in the music business.

They’ll also regularly talk to people in the industry like artists, label owners, promoters and agents, and answer listeners’ questions.

Created and produced by Dap Dip, the podcast production company behind The Price of Football, The Price of Music will dig into the finances behind the latest music industry news and cover everything from streaming to film syncs, publishing royalties to ticket prices.

Known to millions of listeners as a champion of independent music thanks to his three decades on BBC Radio One and BBC 6 Music, Steve Lamacq is a hugely respected and influential voice across the music world.

Stuart Dredge has been writing about the business side of the music industry for two decades, and the Music Ally Bulletin he compiles daily has become essential reading for insiders and hopefuls alike.

A former business reporter and presenter at BBC Radio 5 live, Guy Kilty founded Manchester-based podcast production company Dap Dip in 2019.

STEVE LAMACQ, BBC 6 Music and Price of Music co-presenter: “I’ve always wanted to be involved with a project which helped to demystify the music industry and how its finances work, and now finally I’ve got my chance. We’ll be examining stuff like how musicians get paid, who earns what from gigs and how money gets shared out from big hits. I’m hoping it’ll be, not only really revealing and interesting for music fans, but also informative for emerging artists, managers and anyone else who wants to carve out a career in the industry.”

STUART DREDGE, Music Ally and Price of Music co-presenter: “There’s going to be so much to talk about every week on The Price of Music. We’re in a fascinating moment where the music industry’s revenues are growing strongly, but there are some really important debates about how that money is shared between streaming services, music companies and musicians. Plus, we’ll be getting our teeth into the impact of digital services and new technologies, from Spotify and TikTok to AI and the metaverse. I can’t wait to get started.”

GUY KILTY, Dap Dip and Price of Music producer: “We’re delighted to be launching The Price of Music with Steve and Stuart. The finances behind the music industry are absolutely fascinating and we know that Steve and Stuart’s collective knowledge and ability to explain this often-complicated subject in straightforward terms will make the show a brilliant listen. If you’re a music lover who wants to know more about what really goes on in the industry, or you’re an aspiring musician, manager or label owner who wants some inside knowledge, The Price of Music will give you something of real value every week.”
