The #radiobizuyo2023 Annual Business Summit, organized by the National Guild of Radio Managers, concluded on May 27, 2023, after a week of intensive discussions and valuable insights from esteemed industry professionals. The event, held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, brought together radio managers, station owners, and media experts to explore effective strategies for operating successful radio stations, optimizing podcast performance, and enhancing audience engagement.
The summit commenced on May 23 with Afolabi Olayiwola, the Executive Director of Media Planning Services (MPS), delivering a keynote address. Olayiwola emphasized the significance of audience-centric content, clear reception, and effective programming for running a thriving radio station and attracting advertisers. He stressed the need for compelling content that caters to a larger audience and meets the requirements of advertisers. The discussion also focused on the importance of data gathering, conducting internal research, and compliance with regulations to avoid revenue loss.
Aro Leonard, a renowned broadcast trainer and Owner of Kleverast Scenta, echoed Olayiwola’s sentiments by urging content producers to prioritize meeting audience needs and creating shows that help solve problems and improve lives. Quality content, audience understanding, and adherence to regulations were identified as crucial factors for the success of radio stations.
In a captivating preview of the future, Tony Doe, a Radio and Podcast Consultant at Tony Doe Media, highlighted the transformative potential of podcasting in Nigeria’s radio landscape. With a session dedicated to podcasting on the following day, he provided a glimpse into the profound impact this emerging medium could have on the evolution of broadcasting in the country.
Day 2 of the summit continued the discussions with Afolabi Olayiwola’s address on the state of radio stations. He emphasized the necessity of feedback for growth and explored various methods of collecting feedback, including interactive listener call-ins and social media engagement. Olayiwola highlighted the importance of gathering valuable data through phone-ins, text messages, and user submissions. The rise of radio streaming through smartphones and the role of search engines in raising awareness were also addressed.
Tony Doe’s session centred around advocating for the adoption of podcasts by radio stations. He provided insights and strategies for radio stations to tap into the growing popularity and potential of podcasts, enabling them to reach new audiences, enhance engagement, and extend their reach beyond traditional radio broadcasting.
In his concluding session, Aro Leonard discussed strategic program development, convergence, and the significance of establishing an online presence for radio stations.
Participants had the opportunity to engage in sightseeing activities on Day 3, including visits to Akwa Ibom’s new international airport terminal, The Dakkada Tower, and The Nest Of Champions. The group also toured XL 106.9 FM, guided by Yugee Bamidele, the Chairman of the State’s chapter of the National Guild of Radio Managers.
The summit was skillfully hosted by Richard 'Richie’ Asiegbu Jr., the Enugu State Chairman of the Guild, and Gwendolyn 'LadyGwen’ Oshoniyi, the Guild’s Director of Public Affairs.
