Sean Bean looks through binoculars at something, probably a bird

Sean Bean announced as new host of award-winning Get Birding podcast

Press Release ·

Acclaimed actor Sean Bean is the new host of Get Birding, the multi award-winning podcast for all birders, from first-timers to experienced field observers.

A passionate birder himself, Sean will host the new, always-on series of Get Birding with the first episode now available - just in time for the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatchthis weekend.

Sean Bean, two-time BAFTA TV & International Emmy-winning actor, who is globally recognised for his starring roles in The Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones, is turning his hand to hosting a podcast for the first time.

“It might come as a surprise to many, but I was a keen birder as a teenager growing up on a Sheffield estate, and spent many happy hours seeing what I could spot in our gardens and surrounding fields with my friends.”

“In a busy world, birdwatching is a great way to connect with nature and relax, and I am excited to pick up my binoculars and go on this adventure with the Get Birding community - from seasoned birders, to those wanting to give it a try.”

Get Birding, produced by Peanut & Crumb, aims to make birdwatching and nature accessible and joyful for everyone, everywhere. We’ll hear Sean talk about his own birding adventures, as well as those of his celebrity guests; Sean is joined in Episode 1 with Elbow frontman and BBC 6 Music DJ, Guy Garvey.

Dr Mya-Rose Craig, also known as Birdgirl, hosted the first series of Get Birding, and returns now as Sean’s mentor, guiding him through ‘how-to’ sessions on topics such as birdfeeders, and how to look after birds in the cold. Just 23 years old, Mya-Rose is an experienced birdwatcher, and was the youngest person to spot more than half the world’s birds at the age of 17.

Mya-Rose said: “It’s a real privilege to be working with Sean Bean in this latest series of Get Birding; he is such an icon and comes with a completely different set of knowledge and experience to me. I am a big believer that birding should be accessible to everyone, no matter your age, experience, or where you live, and I’m keen to see as wide an audience as possible tuning in and getting involved.”

Get Birding, an always-on podcast with episodes dropping fortnightly, will also include how-to birding tips, birdsong of the week with sound artist and nature beatboxer Jason Singh, and even mindful bird poetry.

Jane Gerber, Co-Founder and Creative Director of Peanut & Crumb, said: “We are incredibly excited to have Sean on board as the Get Birding podcast goes always-on for the first time. He is the perfect role model to encourage everyone, everywhere to connect with nature, showing that birdwatchers don’t have to just fit one box.”

Katie Derham, Co-Founder of Peanut & Crumb, added: “The Get Birding podcast is going from strength to strength, and is part of wider multiplatform content plans we have for the coming months - watch this space!”

As well as the podcast, the Get Birding YouTube channel @GetBirdingUK will be packed with birding content, and a members club launching soon called The Flock, super serving birders as the world’s only birdwatching content & community hub.

Get Birding - recorded outside in nature - helps all generations learn more about the birds outside our windows, positively impacting wellbeing as well as the planet.

The podcast is made in collaboration with Forest Holidays, which encourages birdwatching as part of their guests’ stays, with nature sensitive cabins available in forest locations across the UK.

You can enjoy Get Birding wherever you find your podcasts, as well as on its YouTube channel @GetBirdingUK.
