Sophie Ellis-Bextor has announced her brand-new podcast Spinning Plates, which launches today and sees Sophie chat to successful women about the balance between motherhood and their working lives. Spinning Plates is part of the Acast creator network, the UK’s leading podcast company.
A singer and a mother herself, who has released 7 albums in-between having 5 sons aged between 1 and 16, Sophie is all too familiar with the balance between family and work. In the podcast she shares her own stories and thoughts whilst chatting to busy and successful women across different fields of work. The contributors are diverse, including entrepreneurs, artists, journalists, CEO’s, musicians and chefs, such as Fearne Cotton, Thomasina Miers, Candice Braithwaite, Caitlin Moran and Sophie’s Mum, Janet Ellis. Each one-hour episode is a relaxed conversation about the expectation of work and the realities of parenting, with all the tears and laughter along the way that you’d expect. For anyone who feels like they have to put on a lot of different hats in their life and play many roles, ‘Spinning Plates’ is the podcast for you.
Sophie says; I love being a working mother, but I find it really tricky to balance my job and my home life. Raising a family is amazing, but I don’t always know how to find the balance between home and realising my own dreams. It can get really ridiculous trying to do both - never more so than during lockdown! The kitchen discos we broadcast during the 2 and a half months of total lockdown were like a metaphor for the inside of my head, with me trying to sing a song then stopping to answer a kid about what we’re having for supper.”
“Chatting to all these incredible, inspiring women for my podcast has been fascinating. It’s so interesting finding out how everyone has their own way of dealing with the challenges of motherhood and ambition. I talk about it with my girlfriend’s all the time anyway, so it’s been wonderful to have the podcast as a way to be legitimately nosey! I thank every single one of the women I’ve spoken to for their honestly, their good humour and their generosity. I think they will help every working mum out there know we are all in it together.”
As well as her recent ‘lockdown kitchen disco’, Sophie recently released her Orchestral Greatest Hits The Song Diaries, which is her seventh studio album and features her biggest hits, but not as you’ve heard them before, alongside the Radio-2 A-listed single Love Is You. The release was the follow-up to her albums Familia and Wanderlust, both of which charted in the Top 10 and marked a change in musical direction for her.
