Washington DC, USA—WTOP News in Washington, D.C. and PodcastOne, the nation’s leading podcast network, have teamed up for a new true-crime podcast that will have everyone talking. The new series 22 Hours: An American Nightmare details the horrific events that led to a D.C. power couple, their 10-year-old son and housekeeper being held hostage, tortured and brutally murdered inside their own home. The killings of the Savopoulos family and Vera Figueroa in May 2015 were among the most shocking and mysterious crimes in D.C. history. Three years later, Daron Wint, the man charged in the crime that became known as the D.C. Mansion Murders, was finally brought to justice.

In 22 Hours: An American Nightmare, award-winning WTOP reporters Megan Cloherty and Jack Moore painstakingly piece together the victims’ last 22 hours, unpack the complicated and shocking trail of evidence that led police to the killer, reveal what happened in the dramatic trial, explore Wint’s motives, and re-examine whether he had help committing the crime.

“The story of this heinous crime has never been told in such detail,” said Cloherty. “We talk to key witnesses, who reveal more information than they could on the stand. We learn from the family’s longtime housekeeper how she believes the killer entered the Savopoulos home before killing everyone inside, something she didn’t discuss during the trial. Plus, jurors tell us how they reached their verdict and what questions remain for them to this day.”

Additionally, the investigation for the podcast led to the discovery of confidential audio recordings of the trial. The hosts challenged the court’s current policy, prompting the chief judge of D.C. Superior Court to launch a review. This could mean, for the first time ever, the public will be able to hear trial proceedings inside D.C. courts.

The series debuts today, with new episodes every Monday on PodcastOne.com, Apple Podcasts, and WTOP.com.

“We’ve reconstructed the timeline, adding the nuances and details from testimony that never made it into daily news reports,” Moore said. “Our podcast is not questioning Daron Wint’s conviction. We are presenting to listeners the evidence against him, his defense team’s strategy and never-before-heard details that help provide some answers – and leave us with even more questions about how this nightmare unfolded.”

“It’s great to be working, again, with WTOP and its parent company, Hubbard Radio,” said PodcastOne Executive Chairman Norm Pattiz. “It’s no secret that true-crime podcasts are a hot space in the medium. This wonderful original content from a great creative team is a super addition to our network. The riveting story behind this particular crime, the high-class production of the podcast, and the power of combining PodcastOne’s and WTOP’s resources is sure to bring new national intrigue and awareness to these horrific murders.”
