Podcast analytics company Backtracks is to close. An email to customers gives three weeks notice. In spite of significant email marketing, the Podcast Index showed that just 191 podcasts were using Backtracks as a podcast hosting platform in February, and 253 podcasts using the company's prefix URL. The company had raised $3.7m of funding.

Backtracks has has its analytics numbers certified by the IAB TechLab. The company's certification for v2.1 of the guidelines covers download and listener numbers for shows hosted on the service, and join Acast as being certified for client-confirmed ad plays on the company's own player.

"So, you're out for a walk? How comfy are those shoes?" Backtracks have announced new podcast player SDKs for iOS and Android. The player code for apps collects "real-time podcast analytics"; but the screenshot also shows that the code can track whether the listener is walking or not (presumably using the Android or iOS API): that could be used to target ads just for you, dog walker.

On Friday we reported on new charts from Backtracks. On closer look, we'd note that the lists are virtually identical to the Apple Podcasts US charts, which do not measure how popular a podcast is. However, the company tells Podnews: "Backtracks Charts uses a variety of scoring mechanisms using direct data via partnerships with multiple listening platform partners, additional sources of direct data, and indirect signals to derive a proprietary podcast score which Backtracks calls a PodScore. Backtracks has significant ecosystem-wide data that the company will release over time." To our assertion that they're identical to Apple, Founder/CEO Jonathan Gill disagrees: "The charts are not identical, but we are modifying the algorithm as it is closely tracking to one partner".
