Pocket Casts uses the standard podcast:transcript feature in your podcast RSS feed. It doesn’t generate transcripts for you: like your thumbnail image and your audio, it’s all in your control. Podcast transcripts are supported by a number of large podcast hosting companies, including Blubrry, Buzzsprout, RSS.com, Transistor, Spreaker and others.

The funding tag is the easiest way to help podcasters get paid. It’s one URL, which you can point to your Patreon, your Stripe account, or wherever you’d like. It’s already supported by many podcast hosting companies, including RSS.com, Buzzsprout, Blubrry and Transistor; and a number of podcast apps, too (as well as Podnews podcast pages).

Is Apple’s Messages app the latest new podcast player? Not really - but it does play podcasts. Send someone on Messages a link to a Podnews news page (like this) it renders with the image, headline, and a little audio button - which, when pressed, plays the linked audio. It looks quite neat. It uses the og:audio meta tag, part of the Open Graph protocol, which is supported in the Messages app on iPhone and MacOS.

As one open standard gets integrated by Apple (the transcript), another has been integrated by Spreaker. The company now supports podping, a near-instant way of communicating to podcast directories that you’ve published a new episode. Already supported by companies like Buzzsprout, Blubrry, Transistor, RSS.com and Captivate (and us!), the addition of Spreaker adds a signficant number of shows, says John Spurlock.

Blubrry has published its statistics report, looking at January. Spotify only accounts for 1.7% of all downloads: CEO Todd Cochrane tells us: “three of our five primary customer categories - nearly 50% of our customer base - Business, News, and Religion - drive our overall Spotify numbers down. You would not expect the Spotify demographic to connect with these categories.”

Blubrry has announced that it will support the alternateEnclosure tag, in a limited way, to help link to YouTube videos. That way, explains Todd Cochrane in the New Media Show, podcasters can link to YouTube videos directly (and use their bandwidth), while supporting SAT streaming, boosts and other things. This sounds fun - we might play with an example in our RSS feed.

Boosts this week include 2222 sats from Blubrry's Mike Dell ("I think I have the hang of this"); 1024 sats from Dave Jones besmirching Spotify once more ("When the Index first started people were roundly skeptical of there being 4.5 million podcasts. Now everyone wants to claim that number"); 3 sats from JAF2100 ("keep up", they say, intruiguingly); 1,000 from Fail Better Media's Georg; 10 from cristobal_mena; 10 from xavi_herrera; and a thumb-up emoji and 10 sats from alfcamacho. Following the acquisition of Podchaser by Acast, Acast's Ross Adams and Podchaser's Bradley Davis will be on the Podland podcast this Thursday. Meanwhile, Mathew Passy wonders if the acquisition enables Acast to "spam more podcasters", Matt Cundill wonders whether to keep information on Podchaser, and Blubrry's Todd Cochrane says he'll pull all his shows because of Acast's "spamming and poaching". Acast tell us the acquisition is "completely unrelated to our email marketing strategy"; and we would also note that Acast doesn't appear to have sent a cold email marketing campaign, to anyone, since mid-June. Perhaps they've heard us.

The company has recently targeted customers from Podbean, Captivate, Blubrry and others, using competitor's logos, and sending multiple follow-up messages to each podcaster. Libsyn tells us: "We are taking these steps to help Libsyn, our customers and Libsyn partners better comply with CCPA and data privacy best practices globally, and because we feel it is necessary to protect listener privacy," though their statement does not mention Podsights by name.

There might be about 540,000 shows in Apple Podcasts, but they're not all active. In fact, according to Todd Cochrane from Blubrry, 75% of podcast [shows] are no longer in production, he tells Stephen Goldstein - a phenomenon known as "podfade". Separately, Chartable's hosting data suggests only 16% of podcasts on the free podcast host Anchor have published more than 9 episodes: that figure rises to 77% of podcasts hosted on the paid platform Libsyn. (Anchor is considerably younger, of course.)

Caution: The data, in many places, confuses "top RSS feed hosting platforms" with the audio hosting platform. As an example: the RSS feed for NPR's Up First is hosted by npr·org, but as we note on that page, the audio is hosted by Triton Digital; npr·org is not the "podcast host". Chartable say they are re-running the dataset and will post updated numbers in the next twenty-four hours. Expect Libsyn and Blubrry, who host audio and also offer tools for third-party RSS feed generation, to appear higher in the revised figures.
