Bought in March 2021 for $57mn, Spotify is to shut down its Clubhouse-clone, Spotify Live. Some live shows will continue as podcasts. It joins other Clubhouse-clones Reddit Talk (closed last month), and Facebook's live audio rooms (closed in December).

How Long Gone has joined the Talkhouse Podcast Network. Hosted by Chris Black and Jason Stewart, How Long Gone has been hailed as "the podcast everyone wants to appear on" (The Guardian) and "a clubhouse for the chattering classes" (The New York Times). The show has also announced more dates for its tour in the US and UK.

Reddit's own Clubhouse clone, Reddit Talk, is to close. The system will wind down on March 21. It's a casualty of the closure of a third-party tool that Reddit used for audio.

Reddit is to start live audio Talks, much like Twitter or Clubhouse. The difference, says Arielle Nissenblatt in a twitter thread, is that Talks are promoted to people who follow subreddits on the topic your talk is about: which could be millions of people. Amazon has released Amp, a "live radio app" seen as their version of Clubhouse or TwitterSpaces. It's available in the US for iOS users only in a waitlist; it'll enable you to DJ your own music show (with "tens of millions of licensed songs" they say), and you can take callers, too. Amp's website is live, and you can download the app to join the waitlist (although we're told one code that works is
twitter
but we suspect it won't work for long). You don't have to use music; you could use the tool for a Clubhouse-like experience too; the app will alert your followers to upcoming shows. Guy Raz is doing a show for it; so is Nicki Minaj.

Business Insider posts an article entitled "Inside the rise and fall of Clubhouse, a pandemic poster child of VC-backed hype now hobbled by 'drama rooms,' unhappy creators, dwindling users, and dubious advertisers". It claims daily average users are down 80% since February. It does, though, conclude: "Clubhouse likely has enough money to see it through years of product updates and experimentation," and the company has attracted $110m of funding.

Oprah Winfrey was on Clubhouse, but only 23,000 people listened. Or only 41,500 people, according to a spokesperson, who claims a "glitch". Clubhouse has announced a forthcoming feature that will let you record your Clubhouse rooms. "Replays" will allow you to download your audio, as well as make it available on-demand in the app. The company also added three new features - a search engine (it's in the explore tab for now); a clip creator; and the release of spatial audio for Android users.

Facebook has launched its in-app podcast experience today. To get listed, you need an invite directly from Facebook: and they'll only play in the US. We gather that Buzzsprout, The Joe Budden Podcast, and Jam Street Media were some of those chosen to get podcasts set up on their pages. Facebook's Clubhouse clone, Live Audio Rooms has also launched: that, again, is for the US only, and live rooms are only available on iOS. "Later this summer, we’ll roll out additional features, like captions and the ability to create and share short clips of a podcast," says Fidji Simo, Head of Facebook App.

Facebook is coming. The social media giant is to get into audio and podcasts, according to Recode. Announcements are due today; it describes "a podcast discovery product that will be connected with Spotify", as well as an audio-only version of 'Rooms', a separate Clubhouse-like product, and a way for Facebook users to add voice messages to the newsfeed.

On Clubhouse, and quoted in Recode, Guy Raz says: "If I was starting a podcast today — I wouldn’t start a podcast, I would just come right here [to Clubhouse]." Thankfully, Guy Raz has restored our faith in him by clarifying what he meant on Twitter: "If you just want to broadcast your voice quickly without friction (or production), much easier to just go on Clubhouse than start a podcast.
