Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard has signed with Wondery. The show became a Spotify exclusive in Jul 2021, becoming available everywhere in Aug 2023; the new deal starts on Sept 1 and will include video shows for the first time (and merch rights). Wondery+ subscribers will get it a week early.

The Trawl has been acquired by Global. The politics show, hosted by political commentator Marina Purkiss, and broadcaster and writer Jemma Forte, is now to be produced by Global's in-house production team, and sold by DAX. It was with Goalhanger.

First look: The UK’s largest radio and outdoor media company Global has signed an exclusive platform distribution and ad sales deal with the US's iHeartMedia. Global and iHeartMedia will license, distribute and represent each other’s podcast portfolios. Global currently owns just under 15% of iHeartMedia.

Spotify is to use AI to clone the voice of podcast hosts into different languages. The tool will translate a number of podcasters, including Dax Shepard and Steven Bartlett, into different languages, as an initial trial. They're working with OpenAI.

In a new study (here presented on video), "Hit Play, Boomer!", Edison Research and NPR have revealed that podcast listening among those aged 55+, so-called "boomers", has not grown in recent years. There is, however, a lot of opportunity in this age-group, said the President of Edison Research, Larry "boomer" Rosin, sharing opportunities to reach the audience.

In Toronto ON, Canada, the police have made 24 Shades of Blue, a podcast giving the Toronto community a behind-the-scenes view of police activities. A CBC investigation has discovered that the interview show, produced by Obie & Ax Inc ("North America's leading podcast production firm"), has cost more than $330,000 so far in a sole-source contract. That money hasn't gone on hosting though: Podnews can tell you that the show's on Spotify's free podcast host Anchor.

Lauren Jarvis has left Spotify to join Literati, a book club startup, as Chief Business Officer. She was overseeing podcasting at Spotify for North America, and is credited for the deals with Joe Rogan and Dax Shephard. A former colleague tells us that "she helped lay the foundation for Spotify’s podcast offering, thanks to a relentless work ethic and a belief that hard work pays off".

Global's DAX will be available to outdoor advertisers as well as audio advertisers next month. DAX, which now officially stands for "Digital Ad Exchange", originally launched in 2014, and allows programmatic advertising in audio streams and podcasts. They also have a new logo (see it below).

Television producer Endemol Shine Group has agreed a deal with DAX as commercial podcast partner. The Birthday Game is their first podcast, which was promoted on radio stations owned by DAX's parent, Global.

More big Hollywood names are making their way into podcasting: Ed O'Neill and Christopher Lloyd (Modern Family) are working on a spy podcast The Undercovers. It's produced for DAX, being worked on by Jeff Schmidt and Mark Ramsey, and launches in October.

UK radio broadcaster Bauer has decided to withdraw from DAX, preferring to sell its audio advertising itself through a relaunched service called Bauer InStream. The company claims it's a brand safety issue; DAX is operated by its main UK competitor, Global.

ITV, the UK commercial television company, has signed a two-year agreement for its podcasts to be placed in the Global Player, a radio and podcast app from the UK commercial radio company. ITV have also signed with Global's DAX advertising platform.

Children's author and comic actor David Walliams has launched David Walliams' Marvellous Musical Podcast with Classic FM, a national UK classical music station. A new episode is being released every weekday for the next two weeks; it's intended to give children an introduction to classical music. (Global / DAX)

The iHeartRadio Podcast Awards took place on Friday night. The winners are posted on the official website, and video clips available on Twitter. Podcast of the year went to Slow Burn (Slate/Megaphone) - see the speech. We reported in November that host Leon Neyfakh, and some of his team, have now left Slate; he did not collect the award.

Global, the UK broadcaster, has added 1,500 third-party podcasts to its popular Global Player and radio apps (iOS only for now). Here's how they're promoting it, and more details from Digiday. The podcasts added come from variety of publishers, including the BBC and Serial; and also contains some 'Global Original' podcasts, made by the company. Global also owns DAX, a programmatic audio ad platform, in the UK, US and Canada.

Podcasting solution provider Voxnest announces today that it has partnered with DAX to help monetise UK audiences. Voxnest customers, including those on the company’s Spreaker platform, now have the benefit of DAX monetisation, while advertisers can take advantage of advanced targeting and measurement solutions. Voxnest President Francesco Baschieri says: “It’s an exciting time to be involved in this medium, and we’re confident that our easy-to-use, efficient and scalable solution for creating, monetizing and distributing audio content will have a catalyzing effect on creators worldwide.”

Global, the media and entertainment company, has launched DAX in Canada. The company acquired the digital audio sales division of Canadian based leanStream, which already represents companies like TuneIn and 8tracks. Global adds Toronto to its list of office locations alongside its headquarters in London and DAX divisions based in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Detroit, Hamburg and Paris.
