The Kids of Rutherford County is new today from Serial Productions, ProPublica and Nashville Public Radio. The four-part narrative podcast builds on a joint investigation by the two news organizations, whose reporting uncovered that a Tennessee county was arresting and illegally jailing children for over a decade.

Serial appears to have new artwork, and is now a podcast archive of shows from Serial Productions. Serial itself is no longer available on Apple Podcasts except within this 68-episode feed, which also contains a number of other shows. Serial still has its own RSS feed (with its logo) if you know where to look; but that's not listed in podcast apps any more. Curious!

Hub & Spoke's Rumble Strip has been nominated for a Peabody Award. Also nominated are PRX's S***hole Country (in Radiotopia Presents), and Mississippi Goddam: The Ballad of Billey Joe (in Reveal). The full list of Peabody nominees also includes podcasts from WNYC, WHYY, Serial Productions, BBC News, NBC News, Crooked Media and NPR - and Hulu's affectionate-but-not-very-helpful take on podcasting, Only Murders in the Building.

Serial is back, sort of. Serial Productions, now owned by The New York Times, has announced a new show from S-Town's Brian Reed and journalist Hamza Syed. The show, called The Trojan Horse Affair, will be released in full on Feb 3.

Elise Bergerson has joined Verve Talent and Literary Agency as a podcast agent. She'd worked for This American Life, Serial Productions and the S-Town Podcast, before consultancy work.

Why did Serial bounce so high in Podtrac's Top 20 Podcasts for July? It wasn't anything to do with the news about the New York Times buying Serial Productions, it turns out - instead, it was that Serial's feed had a promo in it for Nice White Parents, and the amount of people still subscribed to the Serial feed kicked off all those downloads.

Podtrac have released their top 20 US podcasts for July 2020. Surprisingly, Serial has risen from below the top 50 up to #11: because of the publicity surrounding the NYT purchase of Serial Productions, maybe? The ranker only measures participating publishers.

Nice White Parents launched yesterday: the first from "Serial Productions, a New York Times Company". It's a new limited podcast series hosted by Chana Joffe-Walt about building a better school system, and what often gets in the way: white parents.

The New York Times has bought Serial Productions, the production company behind Serial and S-Town, for a reported $25m. The publisher is also entering into an “ongoing creative and strategic alliance” with This American Life "to develop ideas for stand-alone podcasts that can run under the Serial banner".
