Podcasts are not on media plans because podcast ads are “too difficult to buy”, said SoundStack’s Rockie Thomas at the asi International Radio & Audio Conference in Venice, yesterday. Podcasting offers “immense and varied ad options,” she said, adding that brand suitability tools have brought many new advertisers to the medium, and calling for clearer data and alignment with language used to sell radio ads.

The bankruptcy case of former podcast producer Kast Media is continuing in court. Arcadian Vanguard, the company behind Jim Cornette’s podcasts, has objected to a claim by CEO Colin Thomson for any money; the judge has reduced his claim by 50%. Arcadian Vanguard has also claimed that money destined for SoundStack might belong to them instead. Meanwhile, X1T LLC (which is fighting a separate case against Kast Media) is also objecting against protection given to Colin Thomson, who they say has not claimed bankruptcy himself.

The only company that did recertify last month was SoundStack, which achieved v2.1 certification on Dec 31.

What’s the future for IAB Podcast Measurement? In November 2022, we reported that the IAB’s v2.0 certification would no longer be valid after Dec 31 2023. As of today, some of podcasting’s largest names are still only compliant to v2.0, and all will lose their claim to certification by the end of the year unless recertified: Adswizz, Buzzsprout, Captivate, Chartable, “EmpireStreaming” (now Soundstack), Libsyn, PodBean, Podtrac, Simplecast, and “Anchor” (now Spotify Creator Studio).

In the Netherlands, all thirteen Dutch regional public broadcasters have agreed to remove personally-targeted, cookie-based advertising from their websites and apps, in favour of contextual advertising. The companies join national broadcaster NPO, who did similar in 2020 - with a result of increased revenue. Contextual advertising is increasingly used in podcasting by companies like Acast and Soundstack.

Deals: Podcast producer Kast Media has signed with SoundStack … TV 2, one of Denmark's largest media companies, has signed with Acast … and PodcastOne has renewed a number of the largest shows on its network, including The Adam Carolla Podcast, The Jordan Harbinger Show, LADYGANG, Off The Vine with Kaitlyn Bristowe, and Court Junkies.

Soundstack has hired Scott Klass as Chief Marketing Officer, Bill Feichtmann as VP of Finance, and Tony Licon as Head of Product. "Putting the right, experienced people into place is always step number one", said CEO Jon Stephenson.

Live365 streaming stations will now be able to be distributed to 30 million listeners on TuneIn. Live365 deals with music licensing and monetisation; the company's owner, SoundStack, was launched in April and also sells podcast ads.

Blubrry has unveiled a way all its hosting customers can earn money through programmatic advertising. There are no minimum downloads or audience figures required; the company is using SoundStack. We're also told to expect a big announcement from the company on Monday.

A new company called SoundStack was launched yesterday. It combines MediaCreek, EmpireStreaming, Abovecast, AudioReach, Live365 and Audio Catapult, and offers a solution that seamlessly integrates and automates streaming, podcasting, and monetization for audio in one platform. Co-founder Jon Stephenson has posted more details; Live365, an internet radio product, continues to operate separately.
