The New York Times is to make its premium, paid podcasts available for NYT subscribers on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. Spotify and Apple Podcasts listeners can connect their subscriptions wherever they bought NYT access. It’s in addition to the NYT Audio app - you can subscribe separately to just the podcasts if you’d like. It’s reported that most archive editions of the podcasts will go behind the paywall. The New York Times has released The Headlines on all podcast platforms, reversing a strategy of keeping it to subscribers-only. It “quickly became the most popular feature in the Times Audio app”, according to the company. It’s hosted by Tracy Mumford, from London. The NYT Audio app was launched for iOS users in April 2023; it's still not available on Android.

The true-crime podcast Murder, etc. is responsible for re-opening a murder case in South Carolina. The news highlights the benefit of keeping old shows online: the podcast was last released in February 2020, and the host, Brad Willis, is no longer podcasting. “Even though I’ve not picked up a podcast microphone for several years, it’s possible that something good came out of all of it,” he told The New York Times.

On the day Heavyweight was made one of The New York Times’s Best Podcasts of 2023, Spotify is to cancel Heavyweight and the Pulitzer Prize winning Stolen. The Hollywood Reporter writes that Spotify “will work with the show creators to ensure a smooth transition for wherever these series go next”. The cancellations are apparently unrelated to Spotify’s job cuts.

Pushkin Industries is to make 17 employees redundant, representing 30% of its workforce. There are executive changes as well, reports Bloomberg. Meanwhile, the New York Times reports that WNYC is to cut its workforce by 12%, roughly 40 people.

Is the BBC under-performing in podcasting? The BBC claims a new record number of weekly users for its audio app, BBC Sounds; but in the release, we learn there were 177m "plays to on-demand radio and podcast content" in Q2 on the app, and a further 264m "global podcast downloads" on third-party platforms. Assuming 50% of plays went to on-demand radio (which is probably a understatement), that suggests 117m podcast downloads a month overall, making the world's largest broadcaster smaller than the New York Times. (And even if plays aren't downloads, we know how many automated downloads aren't listened-to, and that doesn't change much).

Andy Mills has resigned from the New York Times, almost two months after significant issues were discovered with Caliphate, a podcast for which Mills was a producer and co-host. While host Rukmini Callimachi was publicly censured and removed to a different reporting area, Mills - who accepted the Peabody Award on the paper's behalf for the podcast - had not, seemingly, been disciplined, and questions made of past behaviour. Mills has posted a full statement. Michael Barbaro has not yet addressed the fact that his coverage on the matter did not disclose that Caliphate's Executive Producer Lisa Tobin is his fiancée, which is in contravention of the NYT's Editorial Standards. He has, though, written to NPR stations, and publicly apologised for attempting to silence critics.

The New York Times released their financial results for 2020. They made $36m in podcast ad revenue, up $7m; total advertising revenue for the business declined by 20%, though. Those numbers should increase - this year, the NYT can sell advertising in This American Life, as we reported last August.

The IAB have announced their final schedule to IAB Podcast Upfront, including speakers from the New York Times and ViacomCBS. The event, which will be virtual, is designed for publishers to preview their latest podcast programming to advertisers: attendance is up by 400%, they say.

If that 240m downloads number includes all podcast listening for the BBC (it's a little unclear if BBC Sounds's podcast plays are included), that would mean an equivalent of 80m downloads per month, and would place it behind iHeartRadio, NPR and the New York Times in the Podtrac rankings. Why did Serial bounce so high in Podtrac's Top 20 Podcasts for July? It wasn't anything to do with the news about the New York Times buying Serial Productions, it turns out - instead, it was that Serial's feed had a promo in it for Nice White Parents, and the amount of people still subscribed to the Serial feed kicked off all those downloads.

The New York Times will sell advertising on This American Life's podcast in 2021, according to their earnings call. Meredith Kopit Levien, who becomes CEO in September, said that the company sees The Daily as "a distribution channel for us to launch other great work into the world", and has an average of 3.5m daily listeners.

The New York Times has bought Serial Productions, the production company behind Serial and S-Town, for a reported $25m. The publisher is also entering into an “ongoing creative and strategic alliance” with This American Life "to develop ideas for stand-alone podcasts that can run under the Serial banner".

Podtrac has released its top US podcast publishers ranker for June 2020. NPR regains the #1 slot, followed by iHeartRadio and the New York Times. The ranker includes participating publishers only.

The BBC had 230m podcast downloads in Q1 2020, it says, excluding its own UK-only BBC Sounds app, which claimed a further 123m plays of on-demand radio and podcasts. That roughly translates to 117m downloads per month, making the British broadcaster bigger than the New York Times, but smaller than NPR or iHeartRadio. Podcast ad revenue for the New York Times rose by 30% in Q1 2020, COO Meredith Kopit Levien said during an earnings call. CEO Mark Thompson also noted that the number of subscribers is now at an all-time high of over six million. However, total advertising declined 15% for the company, and they're expecting it to get worse before it gets better.

Luminary, the self-styled "Netflix of podcasting", launches officially today. As The Verge points out, Luminary doesn't have The Daily from the New York Times in it - an in-app message grumpily recommends alternative podcasts.
