BlogTalkRadio is to close on Jan 31. One of the earliest podcast and live-streaming hosts, it launched in January 2006. It merged with Spreaker in August 2017; Voxnest bought Spreaker in 2018; iHeart bought Voxnest in 2020. Most recently it’s been part of Triton Digital. In August this year, it hosted 3,293 podcasts.

The host of Sword and Scale, Mike Boudet has posted a racially unpleasant poll on Twitter. Boudet was sacked by Wondery in 2019 after similar Twitter comments, and was widely accused of orchestrating one-star reviews against a competitor. He has denied that he left one star reviews; and is also the subject of a YouTube documentary. We've again asked for comment.

Spotify is now producing the audio section of US airline Delta's in-flight seatback entertainment. The service contains mixtapes of music, and 42 podcast series including Gimlet's Science Vs, The Ringer's The Dave Chang Show and WSJ/Gimlet's The Journal, as well as Crime Junkie (which isn't a Spotify show). Spotify's original deal with Delta was announced two years ago: at that time it was podcast-only, and Delta was seeing around 16.5m passengers every month; JetBlue also signed with Spotify in November 2019. Podcasts are also on other airlines.

In the US, iHeartMedia has launched its own Private Marketplace, allowing advertisers to buy shows across the iHeartPodcast Network. Using Voxnest, it allows geo-targeting and "psychographic" targeting (only want "intrepid" listeners? Or "conquerors"?) We wonder if it can also target people who've had their first COVID-19 vaccination and are feeling a bit sleept.

Bye, Himalaya: the company is "transitioning away from podcasts towards audio courses". The company launched a $100m podcast platform in 2019, in a statement since claimed to be "partially false".

iHeartMedia is to acquire Voxnest. Voxnest will provide dynamic ad serving for iHeartRadio's podcasts and analytics. Voxnest also owns Spreaker, the 6th largest podcast host with 61,000 shows, and BlogTalkRadio, with a further 8,300. Terms weren't disclosed.

Advertising executive and former CEO of OMD Worldwide, Aegis Media and MEC, Mainardo de Nardis has joined the Board of Directors of Voxnest. He joined AdResultsMedia's Board in July.

Voxnest claimed earlier this month that in April/May, Spotify overtook Apple for total podcast downloads in, among other places, North Macedonia and Moldova. However, the 5m people in those two countries only got access to Spotify yesterday.

Spotify is leading Apple in more than 80 markets, according to Voxnest, who have published a mid-year version of their State of The Podcast Universe report. The report also contains details of the impact of the pandemic on listening.

Some podcast download numbers might be incorrect: and could be 5% too large, according to The New Media Show. If you use Apple Podcasts and own an Apple Watch, your watch automatically downloads duplicate copies of shows you're subscribed to when it's charging - which could be as much as 5% of a podcast's total downloads. According to the podcast, Libsyn already marks these additional downloads as duplicates, but many podcast hosts may not be doing so. In October 2018, Voxnest published that 9.4% of all downloads were to an Apple Watch.

Spotify's continuing to increase its hold on podcasting. In February, Spotify was more popular than Apple for podcasts in Apple's home state of California, according to new data from Voxnest. Spotify's also continuing to overtake Apple in many countries, including Ireland and Australia, according to the data.

Voxnest have released an update on COVID-19 podcast listening across their network. The main claim is that global podcast listens are "up by 42%", a comparison to listening in the first week of January, a time when many people, especially in Europe, were on holiday. The graphs appear to show that all territories have increased since the end of March; and that categories around peoples' "hobbies and passions" are doing well; the company does note that, as a whole, US podcast listens are down by over 20%, however.

Audioboom's revenue for the first three months of this year was up by 40% from the same time last year, according to a trading update. The US$4m secured loan that the company obtained (Feb 13) wasn't used. The company has also started using Voxnest's IAB-certified measurement.

Spotify is now more popular than Apple Podcasts in Canada, according to new data released by Voxnest as part of The State of the Podcast Universe 2019. Spotify also became more popular than Apple in another ten countries in November.

Triton Digital has integrated Voxnest into their Podcast Metrics platform. The tool allows podcast advertising buyers to have an independent view of download data, designed to improve the trustworthiness of analytics. Both Podcast Metrics and Voxnest are IAB Certified.

Spotify is now more popular than Apple Podcasts in Equatorial Guinea and in Sweden, say Voxnest. Sweden is a major achievement, partially because Spotify is based there, but also because podcast listening is particularly high in the country.

Spreaker Prime generated over $1m of podcast ad revenue in its first three months, according to the company. More than $600,000 went directly to podcasters. Spreaker Prime launched on July 30, using Podnews sponsorship as part of its launch.

Voxnest claim that Spotify is now more popular than Apple Podcasts in most of continental Europe, South and Central America: Spotify claimed another six countries in September, the company says, based on listener data from the Voxnest Audience Network. The main holdouts are the US, Canada, the UK and Australia (all countries where Apple has around 50% market share).

Another podcast host is now IAB Certified. Simplecast achieved the citation this week. It means the podcast host's figures are calculated the same way as others, like Voxnest, Libsyn and Blubrry.

Spreaker's analytics are now using an IAB Certified analytics platform. The change occurred on Monday: the company now uses the platform also used by Voxnest's Audience Network, which achieved IAB Certification in May. Confusingly, Spreaker had been announced as IAB Certified in the final Spreaker Live Show, but this was, we discover, not actually correct. Spreaker customers will see significant changes to analytics, as the company trailed earlier this month.

Spreaker has unveiled a new partnership with Streetlib, the company has announced. The collaboration will seamlessly allow book publishers to create podcasts and podcasters to create and distribute digital books and audiobooks.

The "PodVader" Jay Soderberg has been announced as Executive Producer for Locked On Podcast Network, a daily local sports podcast network. Jay most recently worked with Voxnest and BlogTalkRadio.

Voxnest's latest "Spotify vs Apple" data, which we reported on yesterday, has David Tvdon from Slovakia reaching for his own stats: while Voxnest reports Spotify is #1, he thinks the opposite. However, Czech Radio's data shows Spotify has overtaken Apple. The growth of Spotify is also highlighted in this report from WARC.

Voxnest reports that Spotify is now beating Apple Podcasts in three more countries: Portugal, Algeria and Bulgaria. Apple managed to claw Romania back. Voxnest also point out that there is a strong correlation between podcasts listened-to in Brazil and Portugal.

Spreaker has launched a content development program for podcasters. Called BLOOM, the first podcast partner is Flatrock, a true crime podcast; five podcast launches are expected by the end of this year.

Meanwhile, Spotify continues to take Apple Podcast listeners away from the platform. Voxnest reports that in July, podcast listeners in Austria, Czechia and Romania are now preferring to use Spotify over Apple Podcasts.

Veteran podcast executive Rob Greenlee has joined Libsyn as Vice President of Content and Partnerships. He'll report to Laurie Sims, President of Libsyn, and will work with Rob Walch to further the company’s relationships with podcast producers and develop industry partnerships. Voxnest have posted the fastest-growing countries for podcasting. The top 4 are Spanish-speaking, all in Latin America. Number 5? China, growing at 43% month-on-month. Given that China has a population of 1.4bn, that's a significant increase for total downloads.

Spotify is now more popular than Apple for podcast listening in many countries, according to new data from Voxnest. In particular, Spotify beats Apple across almost all of Central and South America. The podcast consumption data is based on February's downloads of podcasts powered by Voxnest including a number of third-party platforms, and reflects Android's success in many of these markets.

Ad company Targetspot has launched "the first all-in global podcast ad marketplace across North America and Europe", according to a press release. Voxnest appears to be one of its first partners; Targetspot claims their publishers are already responsible for over 100 million monthly downloads.

In data shared with Podnews, Voxnest says that, on average, 9.4% of all podcast downloads on its platform are on an Apple Watch device. The 'humps' in the graph above, where the percentage rises to over 13%, are related to weekends. Voxnest's tools include Spreaker, catering to independent podcasters, Hive, a turnkey platform for enterprises, and Dynamo, a standalone monetisation solution. Apple Watches gained the option to play podcasts in mid September.

Dynamo has launched - "a new, more dynamic way to monetize your podcasts by allowing you to add pre, post-, and mid-rolls to each of your episodes that refresh automatically at each play": much like a Google AdSense for podcasting. Operated by VOXNEST, who acquired Spreaker and BlogTalkRadio this month.
