YouTube Music now has podcasts - on the website version only for now. Use a US VPN, and you'll see a podcasts tab top left. Click it to see recommended episodes (Podnews Daily as #1 probably suggests it's personalised), and beneath, a list of featured podcasts showing the square images, like comedy and business. Searching for a podcast, like Podnews Daily, returns a list of podcasts and episodes. Podcast pages allow you to "add to library" (no subscribe or follow button here); and pressing play gives you the option of audio-only or video, as is standard with YouTube Music. The player automatically plays "similar content", which are not in any specific order; there's skip-forward 30 seconds and skip-back 10 seconds buttons (which aren't there for music). YouTube Music's web version is usually very similar to the app in UX and featureset; so podcasts through the app is presumably coming very soon.

On Spotify, some shows will carry advertising, like YouTube and other platforms; revenues will help fund content making, and shows continue to be ad-free in the ABC's own apps. In total, the broadcaster, which is government funded, has more than 175 shows.

Patreon, a crowd-funding platform used by many podcasters, has removed a number of far-right creators including Milo Yiannopoulos and Carl Benjamin, a YouTuber known as Sargon of Akkad, for what Patreon claims is hate speech. (Last year, the company's CEO Jack Conte explained when Patreon removes creator pages, using "manifest observable behaviour"). However, Sam Harris, host of The Waking Up Podcast, one of the top-grossing Patreon creators, has deleted his account in response, accusing the company of political bias; and other Patreon creators, Dave Rubin and Jordan Petersen, have promised to build an alternative platform "that will not be susceptible to arbitrary censorship". There are reports of many Patreon supporters leaving the platform in protest.

Something strange is happening in the Apple Podcasts app: podcast ratings in some cases are being recalculated and can even entirely disappear. Reader Josh sends us this example. Meanwhile, many others are seeing their number of ratings being significantly reduced in the app - "trying to figure out why it said I had 33 reviews when I could only see 25 to read", says one Facebook commenter, "I went from 60 to 30" says another. Are you seeing this too? Hit reply and tell us.

It's regularly pirated on YouTube - here's last Friday's edition.
