Winners of African podcast awards announced

• The winners of The African Podcast and Voice Awards were announced in a virtual ceremony. Supported by podcast hosting company Captivate, the Podcast of the Year went to Mantalk.ke by Eli Mwenda and Oscar Koome Mbabu.

• The Australian Podcast Awards has extended its deadline to Monday Oct 3. Organiser Matt Deegan is interviewed in Media Week. The day after is Podcast Day 24 in Sydney: PODN1215 will get you a discount.

• Spotify’s podcaster dashboard seems to be missing data from Sep 23 and Sep 24, according to a number of podcasters.

• Rivet360 shares what they learnt from taking video and transcripts of a recent podcast and sharing this multimedia further.

• Elwood Jones, the subject of season 4 of the Wondery and Cincinatti Enquirer podcast Accused, is to learn if he deserves a new trial. The podcast highlighted inaccuracies presented in the original trial, and gaps in the investigation.

• LuPlayer is an open-source audio sound player and editor.

• Audacity v3.2 is now out, adding realtime effects, VST3 support, and support for Apple silicon.

• The Zoom R12 MultiTrak porta-studio has been released.

Moves and hires

• BBC presenters Jane Garvey and Fi Glover are to join Times Radio from Oct 10. They had hosted Fortunately since 2017, one of the most popular podcasts from the BBC: they’re to present afternoon drive on the station as well as a new podcast.

• Manuela Bedoya has finished up at LWC Studios, where she was Marketing Lead.

Tips and tricks

• Cross-promoting your podcast and other podcasts is still the most effective way to find a new audience, said A+E Networks VP Jessie Katz in a recent event.

• Spanish-language podcast No es asunto vuestro has published its current revenue. Through subscriptions and advertisers, it earns €3,700 per month ($3,600).

• Open podcast analytics prefix service OP3 has added trailing wildcards to its API. (Here are Podnews’s last 100 downloads, as one example). The project has also added a full privacy policy.

• Some OP3 visualisation tools are being worked on by Dave Jones, James Potter and others. An open user-agent list, including bots, is freely available here; and here are our filtered logfile downloads from Sep 23 for comparison purposes.

• WNYC appears to be switching its shows to use Feedburner.

• “The Holy Grail of transcription” is how Whisper is described in this Twitter thread showing how to use it: it’s a transcription tool from OpenAI.
