British Podcast Awards 2020 winners

• The winners of the British Podcast Awards 2020 were announced over the weekend, in a gitzy, star-studded live ceremony. You can hear a selection of winners on this Spotify playlist, and you can hear the awards again tomorrow on BBC Radio 4 Extra. The winner of the Podcast of the Year was Brown Girls Do It Too from the BBC Asian Network; the Listeners’ Choice award went to Sh**ged Married Annoyed from Rosie and Chris Ramsey.

• Good news for Libsyn, which has published its financial results for Q1 2020: in total, the company’s podcasting arm saw revenue increase by 13%. Year-on-year, standard hosting revenue increased by 17%, though LibsynPro shrank by 4%, and ad revenue, partially affected by the onset of the pandemic, decreased by 28%. (Libsyn runs Pair, an internet hosting company).

• Writing about best practices, Tom Webster has called for podcasting to have its its own, separate organisation “to promote its interests and unique benefits to the advertising community”.

• Spotify has done another podcast deal - this time to make shows with US comic book publisher Archie Comics.

• 9to5Mac reviews Wondery+. “A no brainer in terms of value,” they say.

• Amplifly, a new podcast network in Canada, is dedicated to peer-reviewed academic work.

• Podcast Motor, a podcast editing service, has merged with podcast host Castos. Craig Hewitt remains founder and CEO of both companies, which were operating separately.

• A new community based audio-video podcast app that creates chatrooms for every podcast episode called PodRoom is looking for beta testers.

Photography Daily is a show for photographers of all styles and abilities. The show has already had a number of guests, and is from BBC documentaries and programme presenter Neale James.

Festival Circuit: New Orleans is a new podcast from Osiris, focusing on the history and impact of festivals and cities around the world. The first season asks why New Orleans is such a special place for music.

Nick Angel Stories with Music by Kati Brien is a new format for a podcast, using actors to narrate short stories, and match them with original musical compositions. “We think you’ll feel happy as a loon after hearing it,” the producers tell us.
