Another podcast host gets IAB Certification

Empire Streaming is the latest podcast host to achieve IAB Certification. The company is based in Pittsburgh PA, USA; there are now twelve companies with IAB Certification.

Podkite have launched Episode Kitelinks, a way to share links to individual episodes without the hassle of copy/pasting all the different player URLs. Their demo video uses Podnews as an example.

SiriusXM, which also owns Pandora and AdsWizz, has filed its annual report for 2019. Pandora has 6.2m paid subscribers and 63.5m monthly active users. Pandora brought in $1.6bn revenue ($1.1bn from advertising) although the company admit Pandora’s number of monthly active users “has declined consistently for several years”.

Spotify is #1 again - but this time for music streaming. NotiPod links to research from Mexico, indicating that Spotify has 84.8% of the music streaming market in the country. Apple Music is second, with 6%.

Business Insider has published a list of 29 power players of podcasting. All are US-based.

iHeartMedia showed an interesting graph showing audio consumption by age group. The average American listens to 2.5 hours a day, with 18-34 year-olds listening to the most audio.

Podcast host Captivate has announced four new appointments to its advisory board - Chris Ducker, Kathy Doyle, Jordan Harbinger and Daniel J Lewis. They join Laura Roeder, Evo Terra and our Editor, James Cridland. James has also joined Poductivity’s advisory board, and the Podnews disclosures page has been updated.

Jordan Harbinger notes our comments yesterday about Bixby’s market share, and questions: Bixby has 4% market share? That’s huge then if 4% of podcast listeners use Bixby. - oh, ah, no, but thanks for the opportunity to clarify. We meant Bixby has a 4% market share of voice assistants (and therefore, for podcasting, a 4% market share of the 0.29% of podcast plays that come from a voice assistant). Jordan, who’s better at maths than we are, replied: That’s 0.0116% of all plays, then. We’ll take his word for it.
