Glenn Beck falsely claims show ‘censored by Apple Podcasts’

  • In a social media post, Glenn Beck said Apple Podcasts had removed The Glenn Beck Program - falsely claiming it was political censorship by the company.

    • Podnews has learnt that the issue was a trademark dispute from a third party. We understand that Glenn Beck’s organisation was sent an email in late July, but hadn’t responded. We’ve raised trademark disputes ourselves with Apple; the emails to podcasters from Apple look like this and clearly say content will be removed if you fail to respond. After Beck’s company read the email and resolved the issue, the show returned to Apple Podcasts. Listeners who follow the show were unaffected.
    • Tip: Ensure the email you use in Apple Podcasts Connect, and in your feed if you have one there, is valid - and checked. Here’s more on trademarks for podcasts; and where copyright violations are reported.
  • Acast has announced that from September 1, it will no longer accept new campaigns that use Spotify’s Ad Analytics. “Acast remains focused on fostering an open and transparent environment, working together with partners who share the same vision for the podcast industry’s future.” Acast said it will offer attribution from independent analytics company Podscribe for free to all advertisers, as well as work with a set of local companies in each region.

    • Spotify launched Spotify Ad Analytics in June, offering it for free to advertisers both on and off the platform in what some saw as an opportunity for them to collect data on competitors.
  • Edison Podcast Metrics unveiled the US Top Podcast Networks, by reach. Spotify is #1; SiriusXM is #2 and iHeartRadio is #3.

Tips and tricks - with Pod Predictor by Coleman Insights

  • What makes a good podcast? Resound has posted 29 tips from 29 podcast pros - including our own Editor, who opines that “good podcasts have a reason to exist”.

  • The new Audible show Your Mama’s Kitchen, mentioned below, is one of a trend of new podcasts which re-use existing RSS feeds (and Apple Podcasts IDs) for older, related shows. In this case, it re-uses Michelle Obama’s “The Light” podcast feed (and Michelle Obama is the first guest). It’s a good way to start with an audience who might like the new show. (It won’t appear in any data purporting to show new podcast launches, though).
