The new Apple Podcasts categories go live

• After nearly ten days without any categories in Apple Podcasts, the new categories are now live in the company’s apps. Our own podcast’s listing is correctly in the new Daily News category, in the iOS and new macOS versions of the Apple Podcasts app.

  • Are Apple’s new podcast categories not updated in your podcast host? We’d like to hear about it if so. Email in confidence to updates@podnews.net and we’ll do some digging as to why.
  • Apple Podcasts on the web has upgraded their audio player. It now offers skip forward and backward.

• She Podcasts LIVE has unveiled highlighted speakers and details for the event, in Atlanta GA, USA, in early October, including the chance to pitch a show to PRX and two podcast ad agencies.

• Want to get together and talk podcasting? The Podcast Fans Global Meetup is on Saturday August 17th, wherever you are.

• In the UK, podcast listening is almost as popular as listening to “digital music tracks”, and for young people podcasting’s already beaten music, according to Music:Ally. “Digital Music Tracks” in this context is your own MP3s; music services like Spotify remain rather more popular, though.

• Libsyn has a new website. “This does not change how you create a podcast,” adds one of the support team.

• Podchaser has published more information about their ratings and creator credits now appearing within Player FM.

• Secrets is the theme of the latest podcast listening list from Podcast Brunch Club, which is like book club but for podcasts. The playlist includes four episodes from TED Radio Hour, Family Secrets, The Tip Off, and Showcase from Radiotopia. You can join in on the discussion by joining one of PBC’s 60+ in-person chapters around the world or by participating in their virtual chapter.

• Social podcast app Breaker is beta-testing on Android. AndroidPolice get a sneak preview. (Thought: with Swoot, Breaker, and at least one other 'social’ podcast app we’re aware of in the works, any chance of a shared social graph between them?)

• Scout FM has added support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The app is a “podcast radio” service with curated playlists.

• LA-based business content publisher Podco Media Networks has launched a podcast content network, and acquired two existing podcasts, Confessions of a Marketer and The Innovation Podcast.

• Independent podcast network Relay FM is five years old, and they’re celebrating with some nice t-shirts.

• Royalty news: The Queens’ grand-daughter, Princess Eugenie, is to launch a podcast highlighting modern slavery; in musical royalty, Dolly Parton is doing a podcast with Radiolab’s Jad Abumrad; and in podcast royalty, Adam Curry is seemingly launching a brand new podcast, posting a pilot episode to Twitter.

• Our open list of podcast user-agents is also significantly updated on the Open Podcast Analytics Working Group repository on Github, and there’s a Slack group we’d welcome anyone to. updates@podnews.net for an invite.

• Our podcast pages normally mention who hosts the podcast by examining the audio URL: we’ve now also open-sourced that data for others to contribute to it if it’s useful.

Podcasts

Spreaker Prime: Forth and Ten is a “sport-ish” focused podcast hosted by three comedians. A recent listener said, “They say laughter is the best medicine, and I can’t get enough. My coworkers think I’m crazy because I listen on earbuds, so it looks like I think thin air is really funny!” They’re using Spreaker Prime to make hosting and advertising easier.

Coinciding with National Missing Persons Week, The Disappearance of Des is the story of Desmond Francis Carr, who disappeared 40 years ago today. There’s thought to be only been one sighting of him since: until, that is, this podcast uncovered another one. (Nova / Acast)

The NewsWorthy was one of the first podcasts to get investment from Podfund. In an interview with the company, Erica Mandy gives advice and detail about how she puts together her podcast. (She’s also a Podnews personal supporter.)
