  • Podsights has published a piece about the current effects on podcast advertising from the coronavirus. It reports downloads are holding steady; but that many downloads have moved to later in the day. The company estimates that advertising revenue is going to be down for Q2 by about 20%. (Also: almost half of all podcast publishers surveyed said they were making podcasts about the coronavirus.)

  • The most popular way of choosing a podcast is the show description, according to The Podcast Host who have published the results of their survey, Podcast Discovery in 2020. They discover that most people just use the search in their podcast app to find new stuff to listen to.

  • Owen Grover, the CEO of Pocket Casts, has suddenly left the company. Pocket Casts now has a new “interim lead” of Matt Moog, who’s a board member, while they search for a new CEO.

  • What’s the future of podcasting? A paper for the International Journal of Communication, Podcasting as Public Media: The Future of U.S. News, Public Affairs, and Educational Podcasts, argues that podcasting is at threat from “platformisation”, where platforms (Apple, Spotify, iHeart) control access to podcasts: retaining consumption information and promoting their own content.

  • An idea for an open podcast directory has been proposed by Craig Constantine, using DNS entries. (We’ve added the DNS entry required to Podnews’s records).

  • In Australia, podcast downloads increased by 15% overall in the week commencing March 16, according to a press release quoting the Podcast Ranker for the country. Consumption of news podcasts increased by 30%. The podcast ranker does not measure podcasts from the ABC, which has seen the highest increase in consumption for news websites.

  • BBC producer Tony Churnside has posted “tips for broadcast quality audio from your spare room”; and 'creative audio storytelling post-production team’ Final Final v2 has also posted a long thread.

  • The UK’s Podcast Radio got a cover feature spanning two pages of industry magazine Radio World in their last edition.

  • Family Guy’s Stewie and Brian made a podcast, posted on Seth Macfarlane’s Instagram.
