
Fewer podcast episodes published in June

The total number of new podcast episodes published in June was 4.7% fewer than in May on a normalised basis, says Livewire. Spotify for Creators saw a small decrease, but still retained its leading market share of 26.6% of new episodes. Spreaker (at 15%) and Buzzsprout (at 8.7%) saw increases in share, as did Podbean and Libsyn. Amazon Cloudfront still serves the majority of podcast episodes (now 60.79% of them).

Buzzsprout’s monthly stats report for June suggests a small narrowing of Apple Podcasts’s lead in terms of total downloads. The podcast host saw a -4.5% drop in total downloads (June has -3.3% fewer days than May).

The Podcast Standards Project has added Anytime Player as a certified app, and podcast hosting providers Iono, Podhome, Podtoo and Alitu as certified hosting providers. The full list and certification criteria is on Github, and on the project website; the group aims to advocate for new features that improve the open podcasting ecosystem for both listeners and creators.

As a late filing, PodcastOne released its financial report for its fiscal year, ending March 2025. The company saw revenue growth of 20% year-on-year. It, however, saw a decrease of 44% of podcast downloads - which it blamed on “the departure of non-revenue generating partner networks” and the “continued impacts of Apple’s iOS 17”. On revenue of $52mn, it made a reduced loss this year of $6.4mn.

The co-founder of Pineapple Street Studios, Jenna Weiss-Berman, is one of the new appointees for trustees at New York Public Radio, the owners of WNYC. Weiss-Berman is currently Head of Podcasts at Paper Kite Productions, the film and television production company founded by Amy Poehler.
