The Rest is Football launches today

• The Rest is Football is launched today by Goalhanger Podcasts, which already makes two of the UK’s most popular shows. Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards will host the show; Lineker owns Goalhanger Podcasts, which has 17mn downloads a month.

• Podtrac released its US rankers for July. The average US unique monthly audience was down 3% year-on-year. The New York Times moved up to #4 publisher, overtaking NBC News. SmartLess climbed to #2 show, behind The Daily.

• Audacy released its Q2/23 financial results.. “In June, we successfully negotiated an early exit to an onerous podcast ad representation contract,” the company said, which resulted in a $10.4mn charge: the company didn’t say who (it’s one of their two biggest), or split out podcast revenue data other than to say that RPM (revenue per thousand downloads) grew by 38%.

• Two shows were reportedly removed from Apple Podcasts after Russian authorities requested their removal. Что случилось (“What Happened”) is published by Медуза, which is an officially banned media organisation in Russia; the podcast was removed for two days by Apple Podcasts for “an issue”. Meanwhile, Холод was also removed according to the publishers Holod Media, after a complaint by Russian authorities that it discredited the Russian army. Both shows currently appear to be available in Europe on Apple Podcasts. Podnews is not available in Russia.

• Users of ArXiv, an archive containing scholarly papers, can now convert those papers to a podcast to listen to, using Papers to Pods.
