Spotify is now more popular than Apple Podcasts in Canada, according to new data released by Voxnest as part of The State of the Podcast Universe 2019. Spotify also became more popular than Apple in another ten countries in November.
Aug 19 2023: This broken link now points to the Internet Archive.- The report also reveals that the fastest-growing countries by content creation are Argentina, Brazil and Italy; the UK and US are at #6 and #7 respectively. The fastest-growing countries by consumption are Czechia, Chile and Argentina.

You’re having a laugh: the most listened-to podcast genres in the US are… comedy, news, and “society & culture”, according to new data released by Edison Research’s Podcast Consumer Tracker, which the company calls “the only comprehensive measure of what podcast consumers are listening to (not downloading)”. 36% of weekly podcast consumers are listening to at least one comedy show, according to the data, while 23% listen to a news show.

A new legal risk for podcast directories and podcast apps: unauthorised image use. Podnews has learnt that a company called ImageRights is sending legal letters to podcast directories, demanding money for “copyright infringement”: in this case, they claim that a podcast directory has reproduced podcast artwork that contains their client’s copyrighted image. All podcast directories automatically pull images straight from podcasters’ RSS feeds; republishing infringing images is, this company claims, further copyright infringement.

Rolling Stone magazine says that podcasts are threatening the growth of the music industry, quoting NPR and Edison Research data showing a 20% increase in spoken word listening in the last five years.
