Exclusive: Spotify has made a number of exciting press releases about new podcast partnerships in the past two years: but many of those Spotify announcements have yet to result in a single new podcast, according our research. Where are they? And what’s going on?

Data: Signal Hill Insights and Cumulus Media have released their Podcast Download Fall 2021 Report. It says that Spotify is the platform people say they use the most, beating Apple and YouTube. Newer podcast listeners are likely to be women, the research says, and two out of five weekly podcast listeners no longer have a cable TV subscription.

Sounds Profitable has taken its Podscape, its map of the podcast industry with Magellan AI, and turned it into a podcast. Bryan Barletta says the podcast will help give a voice to the hundreds of companies in this space and help answer the question: “what do you do again?”

The CEO and Founder of Word Collections, Jeff Price, has posted an explanatory video explaining why comedy albums have been pulled from Spotify and other streaming services. In an interview released tomorrow in the Podland podcast, Price tells Sam Sethi that “there’s easily over one billion dollars” of royalties that have not been paid.

In Australia, podcasts from Network 10 will be exclusive on SCA’s LiSTNR app from 2022, the companies have announced. Network 10, a television network owned by ViacomCBS, has a number of podcasts including The Professor and The Hack, which will no longer be available on other platforms.

Alex Paterson has listened to more than 350 hours of The Joe Rogan Experience. Writing for Media Matters, a politically-motivated media monitoring team, he says he: “compiled some of the worst examples of Rogan’s sexist, racist, and harmful commentary over the past year -- all paid for by Spotify”.

The German news industry loves to launch a podcast. A masters student at the Copenhagen Business School, Gwendolin Niehues, has published a 77-page thesis, concluding that “podcasts present a unique opportunity for quality news organizations to highlight unique identity without compromising on legitimacy”.
