The Podcast Academy removes a governor

• After a petition with over 300 signatures and wide condemnation about tweets many considered highly offensive, The Podcast Academy issued a statement that Daniel J Lewis no longer serves on the Board of Governors, acknowledging that the podcast community were questioning Lewis’s commitment to inclusivity. Podnews asked Lewis for a statement, but after receiving it, we have declined the opportunity to publish.

• The IAB US Podcast Advertising Revenue Study will be presented this morning at Podcast Upfront: we’re expected to learn how podcast advertising grew in 2021, and whether the US podcast ad market is now over $1bn. In 2020, the report suggested it had reached $842m.

  • On Spotify, Batman Unburied has beaten Rogan to be number 1 podcast in the US. It’s not the first time; we noted he was beaten by a sitcom fan podcast in November, and by some internet gamers in October.
  • Spotify ran a podcast conference in Berlin, Germany.

• Noise Destroyer is a new website and app that “removes background noise from your audio and video files to isolate just the sound of your voice”.

• “Alexa, are you going to sell this conversation to someone?” What you ask your Amazon smart speaker is sold to more than 40 advertisers, claims The Verge.

• If you’ve ever been to a podcast conference, you’ll have picked up a Blubrry podcast notepad. They’re quite neat. Turns out, other people think so, too.

• Virgin Atlantic has extended its podcast distribution deal for shows like Celebrity CatchUp on their “Vera” in-flight entertainment system.

• Use the Shure MV7? They’ve recently released firmware v1.2.15. Open the MOTIV app to update it (update the app first, we’d suggest).

• Podcasters are earning more than $40,000 a day using “boosts” and “boostagrams”, according to a case study from Voltage. It reports that more than 6,400 podcasts are enabled for value 4 value.

Kermode & Mayo’s Take launched last week - the replacement for the BBC Radio 5 Live show, now produced under the Somethin’Else brand. Film reviews and rather a lot more, it’s one of the UK’s longest-running podcasts.

Pass The Kabsa promises us a “fresh, raw, uncensored” look at the cultural scene in Saudi Arabia, and was featured by The Arab Times. A show produced in Riyadh (and also filmed for YouTube), it’s been running since 2020.
