- Jul 28: A proposal has been made to make it easier for independent podcast apps to link to paid feeds, like those from Supercast, Supporting Cast or Patreon. The detailed specification aims to give the same kind of functionality as Apple Podcast’s premium subscriptions, but from other apps. However, it isn’t clear how podcast app developers would share in revenues made.
- Jun 2: Thing we didn’t spot: Acast+ is going away, as mentioned at the bottom of a press release in April. The tool offered podcast subscriptions. The company has teamed up with Supercast. Note to self: sometimes, the biggest stories are in the last paragraph.
- Apr 10: Acast has partnered with Supercast to offer paid subscription tools. They’ll be available to all Acast podcasters, allowing them to easily sell exclusive audio and video content, ad-free feeds, and the ability to engage with other fans.
- Mar 20: Just over a year ago, Pocket Casts partnered with Slumber Studios for a free first year’s subscription to their service. Some users on Reddit have been taken by surprise by a renewal payment being taken. Pocket Casts has told Podnews that users gave payment details directly to Slumber Studios when claiming the offer, and it was clear that users would be charged after the first year; an email was recently sent by Supercast, the operator of Slumber Studios premium subscription, with details of the upcoming fee; and Pocket Casts has also added help on how to cancel.
- Aug 10, 2023: An integration between Patreon and Spotify has been announced, allowing all creators to offer patron-only content to Spotify listeners. "You can connect your Spotify and Patreon accounts to access patron-exclusive podcasts right where you’re already listening to your favorite audio content," the company says; Supporting Cast and Supercast are also supported in the Spotify app.
