Nielsen: 19% of all US adults listen to podcasts every week

  • Nielsen, a US research company, have released their Total Audience Report Q2 2018. That says that 19% of US adults listen to podcasts each week, and 45% of smart speaker owners claim to listen to podcasts and audiobooks. 43% of all available minutes in each day are being used to consume some form of media.

  • Exclusive: NPR’s RAD open podcast analytics standard (which we reported yesterday) will be supported by Hindenburg, the audio editor built for audio journalists. Chris Mottes, their CEO, tells Podnews that both Hindenburg Journalist PRO and Hindenburg Broadcaster will include a feature to add RAD tags and the related metadata: and that the release will be made this Friday afternoon. (Hindenburg regularly advertise with Podnews, promoting a 90-day free trial and discounted price, which we feel is probably relevant here even if this is an editorial news story.)

  • Meanwhile, Marco Arment, the creator of Overcast, has confirmed in a set of tweets that he won’t be supporting the RAD analytics standard. “I won’t be supporting any listener-behavior tracking specs in Overcast. Podcasters get enough data from your IP address when you download episodes.”

  • NPR’s Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me is to become a TV show. The broadcaster is working with Wilshire Studios, a part of NBCUniversal. This is the second time a TV version of the show has been attempted. In the UK, BBC Radio 4's The News Quiz (available as part of the Friday Night Comedy podcast) was made as a successful TV show in 1990, called Have I Got News For You, which still airs today. It’s regularly pirated on YouTube - here’s last Friday’s edition.

  • Radiodays Europe, a conference in Switzerland in late March, has just announced many more speakers, including our Editor James Cridland, Tom Webster from Edison Research, and ideas guru Wade Kingsley who tells us that brainstorming is nonsense, or words to that effect - here he is at Next Radio last year.

  • Shoutcast, used by many to stream live audio online, has released a Business and Enterprise product. Both services “enable broadcasters to easily create, plan, and broadcast a radio station that can stream to any device worldwide”.

  • Crown Media, the owner of the Hallmark Channel TV network, is to launch a podcast on Dec 14. Last month it launched a radio channel on US satellite radio service SiriusXM.

  • In Seattle, the Seattle Podcasters’ Guild met for the first time.

  • Writing articles about podcasts is hard. Starting off the article is even harder. Thankfully, Eric Silver writes a (not entirely serious, we hope) list of better ways to start articles about podcasts other than the clichéd “They were called audioblogs when they started out”.
